Sprain

A sprain can result from a fall, a sudden twist, or a blow to the body that forces a joint out of its normal position. This results in an overstretch or tear of the ligament supporting that joint. Typically, sprains occur when people fall and land on an outstretched arm, land on the side of their foot, or twist a knee with the foot planted firmly on the ground. If you are suffering from any Florida work related sprain injury please Contact Kevin at the Florida Workmans' Comp law firm of Kevin Moore. You are likely entitled to care and treatment through your employer's WC plan.

Sprains and Strains

What is the difference between a strain and a sprain?

A strain is an injury to a muscle or tendon. Muscles move your skeleton in an amazing variety of ways. When a muscle contracts it pulls on a tendon, which is in turn connected to your bone. Muscles are made to stretch, but if stretched too far, or if stretched while contracting, an injury called a strain my result. A strain can either be a stretching or tear of the muscle or tendon.

A sprain is an injury to a ligament. A ligament is a thick, tough, fibrous tissue that connects bones together. Commonly injured ligaments are in the ankle, knee, and wrist. The ligaments can be injured by being stretched too far from their normal position. The purpose of having ligaments is to hold your skeleton together in a normal alignment -- ligaments prevent abnormal movements. However, when too much force is applied to a ligament, such as in a fall, the ligaments can be stretched or torn; this injury is called a sprain.

What causes strain and sprains?

What causes a strain?
Strains are injuries to muscles or the tendons that attach the muscles to your bones. By pulling too far on a muscle or by pulling a muscle in one direction while it is contracting (called an 'eccentric contraction') in the other direction can cause injuries within the muscle or tendon. Strains can also be caused by chronic activities that develop an overstretching of the muscle fibers.

What causes a sprain?
A sprain is caused by a ligament being stretched too far. A common sprain is an injury we often call a 'twisted ankle.' This injury often occurs in activities such as running, hiking, and basketball. People will fall or step on an uneven surface (in basketball this is often another player's foot) and roll their foot to the inside. This stretches the ligaments on the outside of the ankle, called the talofibular and calcaenofibular ligaments.

Sprains are commonly graded according to the extent of the injury. Grade I and Grade II ankle sprains can usually be treated conservatively with treatments such as icing and physical therapy. Grade III ankle sprains can place individuals at higher risk for permanent ankle instability and an operation may be a necessary part of treatment.

What activities are common causes of these injuries?
Many workplace activities place workers at risk for sprains and strains. These injuries also often occur in normal everyday activities such as a slip, a fall on your wrist, or jamming a finger. Repetitive workplace activities may also cause a sprain or strain.

What are the symptoms of strain or sprain?
The symptoms of both sprains and strains are typically pain, swelling, and bruising of the affected joint or muscle. Symptoms will vary with the intensity of the injury; more significant ligament tears cause an inability to use the affected joint and may lead to joint instability. Less serious injuries may only cause pain with movement.

Typical workplace sprains include:

Ankle Sprain A sprained ankle occurs following a sudden sideways or twisting movement of the foot. An ankle sprain can occur during athletic events or during everyday activities. All it takes is an awkward step or an uneven surface to cause an ankle sprain--that is why sprained ankles are among the most common orthopedic injuries. Orthopedic doctors see patients for ankle sprains very often, and it is the most common foot and ankle injury.

Wrist Sprain Injuries to the ligaments of the wrist are common problems, and they can be quite an annoyance given how dependent we are on functional wrists and hands. When you begin to fall, your natural instinct is to put your hands out to catch or break your fall. In doing so, the wrist is often suddenly, and forcefully, torqued or twisted. This can cause a common injury called a wrist sprain.

Finger Sprains and Finger Dislocations Understanding ligament injuries of the fingers Finger sprains are injuries that cause a stretching of the ligaments of the fingers or thumb. The most common cause of a finger sprain is a fall onto your hand. Often the finger bends unusually causing the ligament injury and subsequent pain.

Groin Pull Also called a groin strain. A groin pull is an injury to the muscles of the inner thigh. The groin muscles, called the "adductor muscle" group, consist of six muscles that span the distance from the inner pelvis to the inner part of the femur (thigh bone). These muscles pull the legs together, and also help with other movements of the hip joint.

Hamstring Injury The hamstring muscle is a group of large, powerful muscles that span the back of the thigh, from the lower pelvis to the back of the shin bone. The hamstring is the important muscle that functions to extend the hip joint and flex the knee joint. The hamstring is used in many sporting activities, as well as normal daily activities. Sports that commonly cause a hamstring injury are sprinting sports that involve sudden accelerations. These include track and field, soccer, and basketball. A hamstring injury can also occur as a result of a direct blow to the muscle, such as being kicked in the back of the thigh, or falling on the back of the thigh. Hamstring contusions are different from pulled hamstrings, although they may cause similar symptoms.

Whiplash Whiplash is condition caused by injury to the soft-tissue structures of the cervical spine, or neck region. Usually whiplash is a strain of the muscles or sprain of the ligaments that move and support the spine and head. Often whiplash occurs after a sudden, unexpected movement of extension and flexion of the neck, most commonly during a car crash. This can also be the result of sleeping or holding the neck in an awkward position.

Reasonable Expectations:

If your sprain injury occurred because of a Florida workplace accident, you should rightfully expect your employer and their insurance company to provide quality care, covering all of your injury related expenses, and compensate you, while you are unable to work if you authorized physician indicates, for your resulting lost income.
